Accurate, CF Card-based GPS Navigation System
Review From: NexTag Editorial Review, Apr 14, 2005
The Garmin Streetpilot 2610 GPS navigation system features a 3.3" x 1.7" 8-bit color LCD, with 305 x 160 pixels that automatically adjusts to outside light conditions. The GPS system comes with two types of dash mounts, an external speaker, and uses audible and visual navigation cues to direct users. Maps are stored on an included 128K Compact Flash card, allowing users to pre-program destinations from a home computer. The included software allows users to locate multiple destinations and points of interests. Also, the latest maps and software can be downloaded from the Garmin Website. The Garmin 2610 has a few drawbacks when compared to other GPS systems available. The 2610 lacks the ability to store maps on internal memory like the 2620. This may be a feature or flaw, depending on user preference. Also route planning using the user interface can be difficult because of the small screen. Another design issue is that the 2610 lacks the option for an internal power supply (batteries), and users are forced to use the included power adapter. At well under $1000, the Garmin Streetpilot 2610 is a value-priced GPS. It is best suited for those who want a simple, yet accurate GPS system in their vehicle, without the price tag of higher-end in-dash systems.
